**Latest News** Mt Cass Wind Farm Receives Resource Consent. Read More
New Zealand is facing an uncertain energy future.
For a working community like ours, with farms, vineyards, small and large businesses, schools, hospitals and homes electricity is vital.
MainPower's 30,000 customers consume 500 GWh of electricity annually and this consumption is growing at an annual rate of 4% - twice the national rate. On a national scale, it's like adding a city the size of Dunedin to the national grid every year.
There is no energy generation in the North Canterbury or Kaikoura, leaving this growing region reliant on external sources for energy and vulnerable in times of national energy shortage. Learn more about our region's energy needs.
We take for granted being able to switch on a light or boil the kettle for a cup of tea. It doesn't take a lot of thought to realise how fundamental electricity is to the way we live and work. Learn more about the benefits of local generation to North Canterbury and Kaikoura.
MainPower has been looking at renewable energy opportunities in the North Canterbury and Kaikoura region for several years and have found some very promising opportunities.
Our vision is to contribute to the local community by being a leading electricity and energy business. Part of this vision includes looking for opportunities to use the region's abundant renewable resources to generate enough energy for our entire region, leaving it less reliant on other sources. Our investigations have included monitoring the wind resource at Mt Cass, near Waipara and we have applied for resource consent to build a wind farm there.
